Child development experts raise concerns that AI-powered toys may impede emotional growth by reducing human interaction, amid growing regulatory scrutiny.

Child development experts warn AI-integrated toys could hinder emotional growth by reducing crucial human interaction.

Child development experts and privacy advocates are raising alarms about a new generation of AI-powered toys, highlighting potential risks to emotional development that extend beyond well-documented data privacy concerns. The warnings come as toymaker Mattel reportedly revives its ‘Hello Barbie’ concept with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities through a partnership with OpenAI, announced in June.

Beyond Privacy: The Emotional Cost

According to psychologists specializing in child development, toys that simulate conversation and emotional connection through artificial intelligence may create what some experts term ’emotional outsourcing.’ This phenomenon occurs when children form attachment-like bonds with devices that cannot provide genuine emotional reciprocity, potentially reducing their motivation to seek interaction with peers and caregivers.

Dr. Elena Martinez, developmental psychologist at Stanford University, explained: ‘Human emotional development requires messy, unpredictable interaction. AI systems, no matter how sophisticated, provide scripted responses that don’t teach children the complex nuances of human relationships.’

Regulatory Response and Industry Pushback

The European Union’s recently strengthened AI Act, approved by Parliament on 20 September, now specifically addresses child-facing AI systems, requiring emotional impact assessments for products targeting young users. Meanwhile, in the United States, consumer advocacy groups filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission regarding Mattel’s data collection practices for its AI Barbie, contributing to a 2.3% drop in the company’s stock on 23 September.

Mattel has not released an official statement addressing the emotional development concerns but pointed to their internal ethics board’s oversight of AI implementations. OpenAI updated its usage policies on 22 September to explicitly prohibit emotional manipulation through API implementations, though critics question how this will be enforced with toy manufacturers.

Historical Context of Toy Controversies

This is not the first time interactive toys have raised developmental concerns. In the early 2000s, electronic learning toys faced criticism for potentially reducing creative play, though research findings were mixed. The controversy surrounding AI-enabled toys represents a significant escalation of these concerns, moving beyond cognitive development to address the core of emotional intelligence formation.

The current debate also echoes earlier privacy scandals involving connected toys. In 2015, Mattel’s original Hello Barbie faced backlash after security researchers demonstrated vulnerabilities that could allow interception of conversations. The company subsequently enhanced security measures, but the fundamental tension between interactive features and privacy protections remains unresolved in the AI era.
