AI algorithms become the new ‘oxygen’ of digital advertising

At Cannes Lions 2024, industry leaders highlighted the growing divide between creativity and AI-driven media execution. With retail media networks like Amazon capturing 25% of digital ad spend, CMOs must master algorithmic literacy to navigate walled gardens and AI-optimized campaigns.

The Cannes Lions Festival 2024 (June 17-21) served as a stark warning for advertisers: the gap between creative storytelling and AI-driven media execution is widening rapidly. With Google’s recent Performance Max update reducing manual controls and Amazon Ads reporting 40% YoY growth in Q2 retail media revenue, understanding algorithmic targeting is no longer optional for CMOs. The WFA’s June 2024 survey reveals that 68% of marketers feel unprepared for this shift.

The Great Divergence: Creativity vs Algorithmic Execution

Publicis CEO Arthur Sadoun’s main stage presentation at Cannes Lions 2024 framed AI algorithms as advertising’s new “plumbing” – invisible infrastructure that determines whether creative work reaches its audience. This comes as GroupM projects retail media networks will capture 25% of digital ad spend by 2025.

Google’s June 24th update to Performance Max campaigns exemplifies this shift. The enhanced AI-driven budget optimization reduces advertiser control while promising better results. “We’re entering an era where understanding algorithmic flows is as important as crafting messages,” noted Martin Sorrell during a panel discussion.

Walled Gardens Tighten Their Grip

Amazon Ads’ June 26th announcement of 40% YoY growth in retail media revenue demonstrates the accelerating dominance of closed ecosystems. TikTok Shop’s expanding retail ad partnerships suggest this trend will intensify.

“The irony is that while we celebrate creativity at Cannes, most budgets flow to performance channels where machines decide what works,” observed Unilever’s Chief Digital Officer Conny Braams during a private roundtable.

The Upskilling Imperative

The WFA’s June survey revealing that nearly seven in ten marketers lack AI optimization skills has triggered emergency upskilling initiatives. Adobe and Google have launched dedicated certification programs specifically for CMOs.

As Publicis Groupe’s Chief Strategy Officer Carla Serrano told Reuters: “We’re seeing clients who won’t work with agencies unless they can prove algorithmic fluency across their teams.”

Historical Context: From Mad Men to Math Men

The current transformation echoes previous seismic shifts in advertising. In the early internet era (1995-2005), agencies similarly struggled to adapt from broadcast thinking to search marketing expertise.

What makes today different is the speed of change – where that transition took a decade, AI adoption is compressing into months. The brands that thrived during past disruptions were those who embraced new capabilities rather than resisting them.

The Precedent of Programmatic

The rise of programmatic buying in the early-mid provides another instructive parallel. Initially dismissed as “just another buying method,” it became foundational within five years – much like how algorithmic optimization appears poised to dominate this decade.

A key difference now is transparency concerns are even more acute given black-box decision making combined with walled garden data policies – issues regulators are only beginning to address.
