At its Build 2024 developer conference, Microsoft revealed plans to deploy Azure AI supercomputing clusters featuring GPT-5 models by Q3 2024. The clusters deliver 1.4 exaflops of compute power, with multimodal processing for text, image, and video analytics. A key component of the strategy is Microsoft’s partnership with Accenture, announced on 18 May, to embed these clusters in custom enterprise solutions for Fortune 500 clients. Separately, SAP integrated Azure AI into its S/4HANA Cloud ERP suite on 17 May to enable predictive maintenance in manufacturing.

Competitive Pressures Mount

The move intensifies competition with Google, which upgraded its Vertex AI Agent Builder on 19 May with enhanced code-generation tools. Analysts note Microsoft’s focus on workflow integration – such as real-time inventory management for retailers – contrasts with rivals’ standalone tools. IDC’s 20 May report forecasts the enterprise AI market will grow at 37% CAGR to $227 billion by 2027, driven by demand for generative AI infrastructure.
