Perplexity’s new AI voice assistant tests iOS boundaries as Siri faces mounting criticism

Spread the love

Perplexity’s experimental iOS app bypasses Siri to access system data, exposing tensions between third-party AI innovation and Apple’s ecosystem control ahead of WWDC 2025.

A bold experiment by search startup Perplexity allows users to query personal calendars and Apple Maps through natural voice commands, testing the limits of Apple’s walled garden while Siri remains confined to basic requests.

The Siri stagnation dilemma

Users attempting Perplexity’s beta feature discover they can ask “When’s my next dentist appointment?” and receive instant calendar access – functionality Siri gained only in 2023 after 12 years of development. TechCrunch reported on 15 June 2024 that early testers praise the AI’s contextual awareness, with one user noting: “It understood ‘Reschedule my 3 PM meeting to Friday’ without specifying which calendar.”

Privacy paradox in AI evolution

Apple’s strict background process limitations force Perplexity to use clever workarounds, including periodic data caching. Security expert Bruce Schneier warned in a 17 June blog post: “When third-party AI becomes this integrated, we’re redefining what ‘on-device processing’ really means.” The app currently requires full calendar access permissions, mirroring controversies surrounding Facebook’s API abuses in 2018.

WWDC 2025 showdown brewing

Industry analysts predict Apple will unveil major Siri upgrades at next year’s developer conference. Current Siri usage statistics reveal stagnation – according to Verto Analytics, voice assistant engagement on iOS grew just 4% YoY compared to 19% for Google Assistant on Android devices.

Historical context: Voice assistants’ troubled evolution

When Siri debuted in October 2011, it revolutionized smartphone interaction by combining voice commands with basic AI. However, competitors quickly outpaced Apple’s offering – Amazon Alexa reached 10,000 skills by 2017, while SiriKit remained limited to 18 app categories until 2022. The current tension mirrors 2016’s “App Store wars,” when Apple restricted third-party app capabilities to maintain ecosystem control.

Monetization minefield ahead

Perplexity’s Uber integration (announced in May 2024) demonstrates commercial ambitions, but risks repeating Microsoft’s failed 2014 Cortana partnerships. Healthcare AI precedents suggest caution – IBM abandoned Watson Health in 2022 after data integration challenges, while startups like Babylon Health faced regulatory scrutiny over diagnostic suggestions.
