MetaMask expands support to Bitcoin and Solana, aims to eliminate gas fees

MetaMask announces integration with Bitcoin and Solana, targeting gas fee elimination by Q3 2025, enhancing DeFi accessibility and blockchain interoperability.

MetaMask’s new roadmap includes Bitcoin and Solana support, with plans to remove gas fees, signaling a major shift in DeFi usability.

MetaMask’s strategic expansion beyond Ethereum

ConsenSys, the developer behind MetaMask, revealed in a press release on April 15, 2025, that the popular Ethereum wallet will soon support Bitcoin and Solana networks. This integration, scheduled for May (Solana) and Q3 (Bitcoin), represents MetaMask’s most significant technical evolution since its inception.

The end of gas fees?

The roadmap includes an ambitious plan to eliminate gas fees through innovative solutions like batch transactions and layer-2 integrations. ‘We’re rethinking the entire transaction model to make blockchain interactions truly frictionless,’ said ConsenSys CEO Joseph Lubin during the EthDenver 2025 keynote.

Technical challenges and solutions

Integrating non-EVM chains presents unique technical hurdles. The development team is creating bridge solutions and adapting MetaMask’s architecture to handle Bitcoin’s UTXO model and Solana’s high-speed transactions. Early tests show promise, with Solana transactions processing in under 2 seconds during beta testing.

The move has been praised by industry experts. ‘This could finally bring Bitcoin into the DeFi ecosystem in a meaningful way,’ noted Galaxy Digital researcher Christine Kim. However, some security experts warn about the increased attack surface that multi-chain support creates.
