Leading PCB manufacturers in Asia, including ACCL, are rapidly transitioning from traditional server production to meet the exploding demand for AI servers. This strategic shift, fueled by a 30% year-over-year demand increase, is transforming the regional semiconductor industry and prompting significant investments in advanced technologies.

The AI server boom drives PCB transformation

ACCL, a major Taiwanese PCB manufacturer, recently announced a $200M expansion in Taiwan specifically to boost production of high-layer count PCBs for AI servers, as reported by EE Times in June 2024. This move mirrors industry-wide trends, with global AI server shipments forecast to grow 40% in 2024 alone, according to TrendForce data.

“The AI revolution is rewriting the rules for PCB manufacturing,” notes semiconductor analyst Li Wei from DIGITIMES Research. “Where we previously focused on cost-effective mass production, now the priority is advanced technologies that can handle the complex requirements of AI workloads.”

Technological and supply chain challenges emerge

The shift comes with significant challenges, particularly regarding ABF substrates. Current IPC reports indicate lead times have extended to 30 weeks, creating bottlenecks in AI PCB production. This shortage is particularly acute for the high-multilayer boards required by cutting-edge AI servers.

Taiwan’s government has responded with policy support, unveiling tax breaks in May 2024 for PCB manufacturers investing in AI-related technologies through its Ministry of Economic Affairs. These measures aim to maintain Taiwan’s leadership position in advanced PCB manufacturing.

Regional competition intensifies

While established players like ACCL and Unimicron focus on high-end innovation, Chinese manufacturers including Shennan Circuits are gaining market share in mid-range AI servers. This dynamic creates a two-tiered market structure that could reshape regional semiconductor alliances in coming years.

Industry experts project a 25% compound annual growth rate for AI server PCBs through 2027, suggesting this transformation is only beginning. The coming years will test whether current supply chain strategies can support both high-margin innovation and the mass-market scaling required by the AI boom.
