Latin America’s IT hubs in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia are growing rapidly, offering nearshore services with cultural alignment and niche expertise, despite wage and currency challenges.

Latin America’s nearshore IT sector is experiencing significant growth as companies seek alternatives to India’s Global Capability Centers (GCCs). With a 20% year-over-year increase in nearshore contracts in Q1 2024, countries like Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia are leveraging their proximity to the US, cultural affinity, and competitive costs to attract businesses. However, wage inflation and currency volatility present ongoing challenges.

Latin America’s nearshore IT boom

Latin America’s IT sector is gaining momentum as companies increasingly look beyond India for nearshore services. According to recent data, nearshore contracts in the region grew by 20% year-over-year in Q1 2024. Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia are emerging as key hubs, offering advantages such as time zone alignment with the US, cultural affinity, and competitive costs.

Key growth drivers

Mexico’s IT sector grew by 15% in 2023, with nearshore services accounting for 40% of exports, as reported by AMITI in March 2024. Brazil is also making significant investments, with a $2B tech park near São Paulo approved by the Ministry of Economy in April 2024, targeting AI and cloud services. Colombia, despite peso volatility prompting IT firms to adopt USD contracts, continues to attract major deals, such as a US bank’s partnership with a local AI firm.

Challenges and opportunities

Wage inflation, particularly in Mexico where rates are between 8-12%, and currency volatility remain challenges. However, local leaders emphasize upskilling and infrastructure investments to sustain growth. Argentina’s new ‘Tech Visa’ program, aiming to attract 5,000 foreign IT specialists by 2025, is another step towards strengthening the region’s IT capabilities.
