The Australian government has pledged an additional $144 million to upgrade the My Health Record system, enhancing its functionality as a clinical platform.

Australia’s 2025 budget includes $144 million to transform My Health Record into a more integrated and data-rich clinical platform.

Government boosts My Health Record funding

The Australian government announced in its 2025 budget an additional $144 million investment to modernize the My Health Record system, according to a press release from the Department of Health. This funding aims to enhance the system’s capabilities as a clinical platform integrated into healthcare workflows.

The upgrade will focus on improving connectivity and enabling real-time information sharing among healthcare providers. Health Minister Mark Butler stated that this investment represents a significant step toward a more connected healthcare system.

Transforming digital health infrastructure

The modernization project will transform My Health Record from a static repository into a dynamic, data-rich platform. As reported by the Australian Digital Health Agency, the new system will feature enhanced interoperability with hospital and pharmacy systems.

“This upgrade will allow clinicians to access and update patient records in real-time during consultations,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Deveny, CEO of the Australian Medical Association, in an interview with ABC News. The changes are expected to reduce medication errors and improve care coordination.

Privacy and security enhancements

Alongside functionality improvements, the funding will strengthen the system’s privacy and security measures. The Australian Cyber Security Centre will collaborate on implementing advanced protection protocols to safeguard sensitive health data.

Patient advocacy groups have welcomed the investment but emphasize the need for robust consent mechanisms. “Patients must maintain control over who accesses their information,” said Leanne Wells from the Consumers Health Forum in a statement to The Guardian.

The upgraded system is scheduled for phased rollout beginning mid-2026, with full implementation expected by 2028.
